Introduction to Evaluation

Evaluation is the key component of any program that focuses on continuous improvement. Evaluation is used in online education to:

  • determine the quality, effectiveness, and continuous improvement of the program and/or course;

  • understand the pros and cons of online learning courses or programs; and

  • make improvements

Most people believe that evaluation occurs after the course has been completed. Wrong! Evaluation occurs:

  • Before (needs assessment) to plan

  • During (formative evaluation) to make improvements; and

  • After (summative evaluation) to determine outcomes.
